FAQ

Q: Can I use slotted nipples on a TRUDI?

A: No. Slotted nipples are only intended for depth-setting a wheel. When used to bring spokes to proper tension, too much force is applied, which can damage or render the nipple unusable. It is critical to use double-square, Squorx, or hex nipples with TRUDI.

Q: My TRUDI will not connect to the USB (the icon stays red on the tablet), how do I get a connection?

A: If your TRUDI will not connect to the USB, run the Application Reset procedure. These steps are available on our How-To page or clicking here: https://berdtechnology.com/pages/application-reset  Be sure to follow these steps carefully.

Q: How do I know when my wheel is done?

A: The TRUDI tablet home screen has six “pie wedges.” When all of the specifications in your wheel recipe are met, the wedges will turn green. However, TRUDI will never declare a wheel “done.” Final judgment is up to you, based on your standards.

Q: I have run the Full True multiple times and I’m still not getting a perfectly true wheel, what is wrong?

A: For best results you may need to use multiple truing modes with TRUDI. There are three modes (Full True, Quick True and Quick Dish) that are explained here: https://berdtechnology.com/pages/truing-methods

Q: I have run the Application Reset and the WAM motor will not turn, is it broken?

A: Not necessarily. Please try the following steps:

  1. Run the Application Reset again.
  2.  Once the application has restarted and connected to the USB, switch to Manual Drill Mode.
  3. Give the drill 2–3 trigger pulls to ensure it is functioning properly.
  4. Try running the Dish process again; the WAM motor should now operate correctly.

Q: What bits can I use in the TRUDI driver/drill?

A: Your TRUDI will come with a square and a Squorx bit. If you need a 5.5mm hex bit please email support@berdtechnology.com and we will send you a 5.5mm hex bit. If you use other nipple types and don’t have the appropriate bit, let us know—we will do our best to create a solution for you.

Q: Why are my spoke tension measurements inconsistent?

A: The tensiometer is the most challenging part of TRUDI to master. Please review our tensiometer instructions. We also recommend practicing your technique by measuring the same spoke repeatedly. Aim for consistency—ideally, all measurements should be within approximately 5 kgf.

Q: I’ve entered all my measurements, but TRUDI is not providing a solve (number of drill turns). What should I do?

A: If TRUDI is not calculating results in the truing modes, check the following:

  1. Ensure your tablet is connected to Wi-Fi and is sending/receiving data.
  2.  Confirm you are logged into the system by clicking the hamburger icon in the top-right corner of the tablet.
  3. Try cycling through the truing modes to see if calculations appear.

If the issue persists, run an Application Reset.

Q: I don’t see the spoke that I’m using in the recipe spoke list. What should I do?

A: TRUDI will still achieve excellent results without an exact spoke match. Select the closest available spoke from the list. We also encourage you to let us know which spokes you’d like added by emailing: support@berdtechnogy.com.

Q: Can I use carbon spokes on TRUDI?

A: The current software version does not support carbon spokes. However, we are working on adding this option to the spoke menu by the end of 2025.

Q: Can I true a wheel with 2:1 lacing pattern?

A: Currently, TRUDI does not support 2:1 lacing patterns. We are developing this feature and expect it to be available by the end of 2025.

Q: When will there be a TRUDI solution for truing a wheel with the tire on?

A: Look for a product reveal in February 2026 with exciting updates on new TRUDI features.

Q: Can I use eBike wheels in a TRUDI?

A: Some eBike wheels work with TRUDI using the included QR Fingers. However, if your eBike wheel is smaller than 700c/29", you will need to wait until February 2026, when the full eBike package is released.

Q: When I save a wheel, where does that information go?

A: We store all of those saved wheel specifications in our database. We are developing a portal to view and download these reports that will be available by the end of 2025.

Q: Can I use 20” wheels in a TRUDI?

A: At present, TRUDI supports 29", 27.5", and 26" wheels. In February 2026, we will launch new Fingers that accommodate wheels from 32" down to 20".

Q: What is the shortest spoke length compatible with current and future TRUDI tensiometers?

A: The TRUDI Tensiometer requires a minimum “available span” between spoke crossings of at least 110 mm. Actual compatibility therefore depends on wheel design factors such as spoke count, lacing pattern, wheel size, and hub flange diameter. In practice, TRUDI supports the vast majority of wheels 26 inches and larger.

Looking ahead, in 2026 we will introduce the TRUDI MINI Tensiometer, which will extend compatibility to wheels with spans as short as 85 mm, further broadening support for compact and high-cross lacing patterns.
